Cross-Cultural Collaboration

Khamira – A world music project from India and Wales with a genre-bending sound which fuses Indian Classical, Welsh folk, jazz and rock. With all the musicians bringing their skills and influences to bear on the band sound, Khamira’s music is somewhere between the cinematic scope of the Pat Metheny Group and the grunge funk of Miles Davis’ 70s band, inter-twinned with passages of melancholic Welsh folk music and Indian classical virtuosity.

Leading Indian musicians Aditya Balani (guitar), Suhail Yusuf Khan (sarangi and vocals) and Vishal Nagar (tabla), join forces with 4 ground-breaking musicians from the UK Tomos Williams (Trumpet), Mark O’Connor’s (Drums), Dave Jones (Piano) and Aidan Thorne (Bass) to create the unique sound that is Khamira.

Khamira’s CD has already been released in the UK, and has received stellar reviews:

“An album to place close to Shakti’s Natural Elements – and I can’t think of much higher praise than that”- Jazz Journal ****
“Exhilarating and mesmeric” – AP Reviews
“A true fusion of Welsh and Indian folk and classical music with a healthy injection of Big Fun-era Miles Davis.” – Wales Arts Review

Khamira will tour India in January 2018 to support the release of the CD. Khamira have already undertaken a 9 date tour of Wales in May 2017, and the Indian tour will be the ‘return leg’ as an official participant in the UK/India 2017 events – funded by the British Council and Wales Arts International.
