Born deaf, she ventured into thinking through sound and its materiality by exploring it in her texts, drawings, performances, videos, and carefully crafted notational systems.<\/p>\n<p>In her series, <em><strong>&#8220;The sound of non-sounds&#8221;<\/strong><\/em>she employs poetry, musical symbols and graphic notations to create witty and evocative \u2018readings\u2019 of non-sounds. One of the most familiar yet irksome sounds in our lived experience, it has been turned into a recurring theme and material for artistic inquiry by some!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zWeyKXA0PGk\">Vivian Caccuri<\/a>\u00a0 is one such artist whose recent work <a href=\"https:\/\/viviancaccuri.net\/The-Mosquito-Shrine\"><b><i>\u2018Mosquito Shrine\u2019<\/i><\/b> <\/a>\u00a0(at the Kochi Muziris Biennale 2018) zooms in on the micro drones of a mosquito while zooming out and connecting it to the collective subconscious of a colonial past.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Vivian Caccuri at Kochi-Muziris Biennale\" width=\"1060\" height=\"596\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zWeyKXA0PGk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Vivian employs recorded and produced samples, mosquito nets, chimes, ultra-violet lights and a massive tower of subwoofers, to create a multi-sensory environment that shakes up established associations of what is considered to be an everyday nuisance, and gives way to a layered and complex<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanchronicle.com\/nation\/in-other-news\/040319\/how-mosquitoes-shaped-colonial-history-caccuri-has-answer.html\"> discourse about history<\/a> and social conditioning.<\/p>\n<p>Another work\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JkJZaN2nshU&amp;feature=emb_title\"><b><i>\u2018Truce<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i>: Strategies for Post-Apocalyptic Computation\u2019<\/i><\/b> from 2009, by artists <a href=\"http:\/\/robinmeier.net\">Robin Meier<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/alimomeni.net\">Ali Momoni<\/a> looks closely at how mosquitoes mate by modulating their flying speeds aka buzzing frequencies! They have created a reciprocal system between a computer and three mosquitos where each tunes their frequencies as per the other\u2019s musical inflections, producing an uncanny synchronization. Interestingly, the stimulus sound produced by the computer to set off the symphony is derived from the North Indian classical vocal tradition of Dhrupad. The significance of a sonic identity in the design of a product, label, system or service is colossal, yet it is a dimension that is often passed over in the process.<\/p>\n<p>A quick glimpse into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.massivemusic.com\/en\/blog\/detail\/a-brief-history-of-sonic-branding\">past of sonic branding<\/a> reveals some iconic delights, many of them associated with the advent of technological systems. Also called earcons, one of the most recognizable of the lot is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=miZHa7ZC6Z0\">Microsoft Windows 95<\/a> startup chime, designed and produced by musician Brian Eno\u2013\u00a0 ironically, on a Mac!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Microsoft Windows 95 Startup Sound\" width=\"1060\" height=\"795\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/miZHa7ZC6Z0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Eno, well-known as an ambient composer and producer with acts such as Talking Heads, U2, David Bowie, Coldplay, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/50824\/creating-windows-95-startup-sound\">recounts his experience<\/a> of designing the 6 second arpeggio that sounded when PCs with Windows 95 were booted up\u2013<\/p>\n<p><b><i>\u201cI got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music. I was so sensitive to microseconds at the end of this that it really broke a logjam in my own work.
