GMI and Berklee celebrate a decade-long partnership with the announcement of the GMI-Berklee Track.

Students from GMI will now be able to transfer credits for select courses and continue their music education at Berklee

New Delhi: Global Music Institute (GMI) is India’s leading contemporary music institute and  Berklee’s Global Academic Partner in India. GMI and Berklee are pleased to announce the GMI-Berklee Track. GMI becomes the first and only music institute in the Indian subcontinent to formalize a Credit Transfer Agreement (CTA) with Berklee.

The GMI-Berklee Track is a great opportunity for aspiring musicians as it enables them to begin their music education at GMI in India and complete an undergraduate degree at Berklee. Once accepted at Berklee, students can then transfer credits for agreed upon courses completed at GMI.

Speaking about this, Aditya Balani, Co-founder and Director, Global Music Institute said, “We have been closely working with Berklee College of Music for a decade now. Both GMI and Berklee share a global vision for music education and Berklee has been highly supportive and understanding of our philosophy. I am very glad to see our academic partnership strengthen further with the credit transfer agreement. Starting one’s music education abroad can be a bit daunting and could be financially challenging as well. Having a pathway to ease into this process will definitely be inviting to a lot of aspiring musicians in India and around. We are positive that the GMI- Berklee Track will bring them a step closer towards a successful career in music with access to the highly sought after music education delivered by both the institutions.”

The importance of the musical traditions of India cannot be overstated,” said Berklee’s President Roger H. Brown. “India’s remarkable palette of music has great influence felt around the world as it fuses with and is adopted by artists in many genres, and reaches a widening audience through streaming platforms and the film industry. Berklee experiences this impact through our talented Indian students, graduates, and faculty members who have become a force on our campus. For a decade, GMI, founded by Berklee alumni Aditya and Tarun Balani, has been a leader in preparing exceptional students for their studies at Berklee and for their musical careers. GMI continues to be an important partner in Berklee’s global mission of harnessing the power of music to build a better world.

Adding further, Assistant Vice President for Global Initiatives at Berklee College of Music Jason Camelio, said, “GMI has an excellent record of delivering high quality music education programs that prepare students for careers in the global music industry. This is an institute founded and led by Berklee graduates; where Berklee alumni teach, where Berklee visits to conduct clinics, auditions and interviews; and where we have seen aspiring students prepare for a Berklee education. Students who complete the Berklee Track at GMI will join the Berklee Global Academic Partners students in our programs in Boston, Valencia, Spain and Berklee Online who are among our most successful.

Dean of Admissions at Berklee College of Music Damien Bracken states, “We are pleased to establish this new partnership with our distinguished alumni whom we fondly refer to as “The Balani brothers“.  GMI has hosted admissions auditions and interviews for the past several years and acts as an important gateway to Berklee for aspiring Berklee candidates from India. Congratulations!”

The GMI-Berklee Track provides multiple advantages to students interested in being accepted at Berklee. The students will be able to save a significant amount of money on tuition and housing costs by studying closer to home. Moreover, if accepted to Berklee, the students will be able to focus on continuing studies and major courses at Berklee and thus will arrive prepared to succeed. Historically, academic partner students have typically ranked amongst the top students at Berklee and have a higher success rate at degree completion.

GMI alumnus, Dhruv Goel (Berklee `15), who transferred to Berklee to complete his graduation is now successfully based in Los Angeles and has worked on various projects that involved Hans Zimmer, Netflix, Facebook, etc. Dhruv adds, “being at GMI was a very important part of my musical journey. The music theory and ear training courses I took there gave me a big leg up when I moved to Berklee. GMI has played a pivotal role in the growth of formal music education in India and has been particularly invaluable to the music community. I’ll always be grateful for the lifelong friends I made there”.

Over the course of the next few months, Berklee and GMI will be co-hosting a series of panel discussions, masterclasses and info sessions led by popular artists, faculty, alumni along with representatives of the two institutes. The sessions aim to create awareness about the avenues of furthering music education, career pathways and future possibilities in the changing global landscape.
